Mega bugs return to the singapore science centre.

So yesterday, I found THIS on our balcony:

It may not seem very big, as I didn't show a size comparison in this photo, but this was the biggest grasshopper I have ever seen! Seriously, it was the size of my hand, and SO creepy looking. It looked like a mix between an alien and a dinosaur. Good ol' Singapore bugs. We also have a gecko (trying to get video/photo - but he's fast) and a family of sugar ants living with us currently. The little gecko is actually very cute, other than the times it darts out from under the sofa, scaring the living crap out of me. The ants, however, I am slowly trying to destroy (sorry PETA).

Learning how it feels to have sticky fly feet at the Singapore Science Centre.
Since it seems as though we are living with a lot of buggy creatures in Singapore, why WOULDN'T we go see larger-than-life versions of our little friends at the Singapore Science Centre's Mega Bugs Return exhibit?! Linna and I went on this adventure yesterday morning, and it was kind of like walking onto the set of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids". Remember that flick?! One of the guides in the exhibit told us that this was the second time (15 years later) that the Science Centre is hosting the exhibit. The first time was around the time "Honey, I shrunk the Kids" came out in theaters.

Coloring bugs.

Larger-than-life.

Oh look, it's the Minnesota State Bird!
There was maybe a dozen kids at the exhibit when we went Tuesday morning, which was great because Linna could run around, and get a lot of one-on-one attention from the guides. These guides are so patient with the children, as they really took the time to show us around, and let Linna explore what she wanted to. The exhibit had huge moving grasshoppers, praying mantis, ants, bees, centipedes, mosquitoes, etc. There were little trees and caves for Linna to climb in and explore. We even got to color a big styrofoam butterfly and caterpillar, and bring them home for Papa Saigh (extra $5 for this activity). Linna's favorite part of the whole exhibit, was the "Fly on the Wall" activity, where they had these little pads that showed visitors what it's like to have sticky feet like flies have. I had no idea flies had sticky feet like that. Our guides were really knowledgeable when it came to the world of bugs. At one point, I was looking in a small glass box that housed some REAL beetles, when I saw a couple laying upside-down on the ground. I asked our guide if they were dead, and she told me that the upside-down ones were actually just the coat/skin of a moulting beetle. How interesting! She then pointed out the white beetle in the glass box that had just shed its coat/skin. So cool!

See the white bug on the green leaf? He just shed his skin/coat and it's on the ground (upside-down)!

Button game board.

Cool tunnel.
This was our second visit to the Science Centre, as we went last year when Linna was little. She got so much more out of it this time around! Outside the Mega Bugs Return exhibit, Linna found these four Singaporean student-volunteers at a table with tiny toy animals. Linna LOVES animals, so we actually spent almost a half-hour at this table, while the four guys taught my little girl all she needed to know about animals. They said Linna was their youngest student to date. Very cute!

Excited to see what the Singapore Science Centre has in store for visitors during our next adventure!
